Cisco CCNA, CCENT, CCNP, And CompTIA Questions: HSRP, OSPF Cost, Route Summarization, And More!

By: Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933

Let’s test your knowledge of important CCNA, CCENT, CCNP, and Network+ exam topics!

CCNA Certification:

The term used for an OSPF path metric is ____________ .

Extra credit: What formula does OSPF use to calculate that metric?

Answer: OSPF’s metric is referred to as cost, and the calculation is 100,000,000 / interface speed in bps.

Cisco CCENT / CompTIA Network+ Question:

Which of the following do TCP and UDP headers have in common?

A. sequence number

B. source port

C. source IP address

D. window

E. destination port

F. destination IP address

G. ACK bit

H. reset bit

Answer: B, E. In addition to the source port and destination port numbers, the UDP and TCP headers also have a checksum field in common.

CCNP Certification / BSCI Exam:

In ISIS, what is the most efficient point of a network at which to perform route summarization?

A. An L1 router.

B. An L2 router.

C. An L1/L2 router.

D. A DIS router.

Answer: C. L1/L2 routers are area boundary routers in ISIS, and this is the most efficient point at which to configure route summarization

CCNP Certification / BCMSN Exam:

Short answer: An HSRP router is the primary router and it has a priority of 100. Another router comes online in the same group and it has a priority of 107. Does the new router become the primary? If so, why? If not, what additional configuration is needed to make it the primary?

Answer. By default, the new router with the higher priority will not become the primary router. To allow a router with a higher priority to take over the role of HSRP primary from an existing and normally functioning primary, the preempt option must be configured on the router with the higher priority.

Let’s use a two-router HSRP deployment as an example.

Ethernet0 - Group 5

Local state is Standby, priority 150

Active router is 172.12.23.3, priority 100 expires in 8.072

Standby router is local 1 state changes, last state change 00:14:24

R2 now has a higher priority, but R3 is still the active router. R2 will not take over as the HSRP primary until R3 goes down - OR the preempt option is configured on R2.

R2(config-if)#standby 5 priority 150 preempt

1d11h: %STANDBY-6-STATECHANGE: Ethernet0 Group 5 state Standby -> Active

R2#show standby

Ethernet0 - Group 5

Local state is Active, priority 150, may preempt

Hellotime 4 sec, holdtime 12 sec Next hello sent in 1.844

Virtual IP address is 172.12.23.10 configured

Active router is local

Standby router is 172.12.23.3 expires in 10.204

Virtual mac address is 0000.0c07.ac05 2 state changes, last state change 00:00:13

Teleseminar How-to Guide: The T-Profit System. A Review

By: Elisabeth Kuhn

Teleseminars seem to be all the rage these days, and for good reason. They’re a great way to build lists and make money, both for the organizers and their guests. They’re also really great for creating a connection between audience and expert, a connection that has two-way benefits.

If you’ve been wondering how you could possibly get in on the action, wonder no more: Filmmaker Andy Duncan (of “I Need Cash Now” fame) and his business partner Steve Roye have put together the T-Profit System, the ultimate step-by-step how-to guide for putting together a teleseminar series that delivers the goods, for the audience, your JV-partners, and yourself.

You may have thought you could never do that. You may not think of yourself as an expert. You don’t think you’re very witty. Heck, you may be shy! But Andy and Steve will quickly reassure you that neither exceptional wit nor fame or even expertise is required. Even better, teleseminar are among the easiest and most inexpensive products to produce. What’s not to like?

The T-Profit system consists of a total of eight MP3s, along with PDF transcripts, plus live Q&A sessions.

First, there are the four instructional MP3s, in which Andy and Steve present the basic formula. They give some background and how they themselves got started. They talk about the reason why teleseminars work as well as they do. And then they launch into the details of exactly how you can go about putting together your own.

BTW, “instructional” may not be quite the right word for those MP3s. Yes, you’ll learn a ton - as promised. But they are so much fun you sure won’t feel like you’re studying terribly hard.

Just in case you’re still intimidated, they provide you with three examples of teleseminars with experts who themselves were new to the teleseminar genre. For two of them, that very teleseminar you’ll be hearing was their very first. And yet, they sound like old pros!

As mentioned above, the MP3s also come with transcripts, and many of them have outlines as well. A bonus seminar, produced as a bonus for one of the example seminars, is included as well.

Here’s yet another thing that makes T-Profit System special: included in the price are three bonus coaching calls in monthly intervals (actually, there was a fourth one that took place right after the system was launched, for all the early bird sign-ups), where Steve and Andy will answer any questions that come up.

And I really mean ANY questions. Andy and Steve are incredibly gracious and helpful. I’ve asked a few really basic questions, and Steve walked me patiently through all of my challenges. He did the same for other callers. They didn’t even laugh!

I bought T-Profit System the minute it came out. Why? I loved Andy’s “I Need Cash Now” program, and also did Andy and Steve’s 4 week coaching program. I got so much out of the two programs, I felt the T-Profit system was a complete no-brainer.

And that even though I believed that I already knew enough about teleseminars from the coaching program (and I did know a lot!), this program actually delivered even more details and step-by-step guidelines, thereby greatly reducing the intimidation factor, and greatly increasing the potential for success. I also find that I learn best when I get the same info presented several different ways.

Considering that I was a total web newbie about 6 months ago, I keep finding myself absolutely astonished by how far I’ve come. I have multiple websites, blogs, I’ve already come up with a concept for a series of teleseminars, and I have even done (and uploaded!) my first interview. Look for more on all that in the near future. For right now though, you may want to check out the T-Profit System, so you’ll get in on the live coaching calls while they last.

Review on Ewen ChiaÂ?s Super Affiliates Membership Programme

By: Tim Ng

If you ask me why Ewen Chia?s Super Affiliates Membership Site is the must-have site for all affiliate marketers, I can go on and on to rave about its benefits. Ewen has always over-delivered but this time, he has really gone out of the way to make you a success.

I first met him at Sheraton Towers in Singapore and he made a casual remark that he was going to start a membership site that would genuinely assist people in making big fortunes from affiliate marketing. Ewen was concerned of the number of people being scammed too often online by programmes that promise lots but deliver little.

Well, Ewen Chia has truly gone out of the way this time round to create this Super Affiliates Membership Site. The amount of sharing done by him was phenomenally astronomical. I am truly impressed after subscribing to the programme.

Ewen Chia literally shows you exactly how to start your own internet business, so that you’re fully up and running, dumping cash into your bank account if you are willing to take action from his coaching sessions. From Ewen Chia?s own words, ?Affiliate Marketing is your license to print money on demand - anytime you want.? Encouraging words indeed and he means it.

Most importantly, Ewen Chia is not just going to transform you into a normal affiliate. He is going to turn you into a Super Affiliate with his Super Affiliates Membership Site.

Let me give you a summary of what Ewen has made available in his site:

b. All the details behind his no-brainer simple system to build you a super affiliate business rapidly that’ll put your competition to shame!

c. How to dominate markets from the inside out, and build a reputation that’ll grow your profits for years.

Remote Blog or Self Hosted Blog?

By: Len Hutton

So you?ve decided to blog, but aren?t sure whether you should host the blog yourself or sign up for a free service like blogger.com. It?s a dilemma that many bloggers face. There are pros and cons to both, which makes the decision difficult for many. Neither is perfect, and neither is for everyone. Fortunately, you should be able to make the best decision for you if you are armed with adequate knowledge of both. In this newsletter, we?ll go over services like blogger.com and others, plus software that allows you to host your own blog. We?ll also go over the pros and cons of each. After reading this, you will know which is best for you.

Who offers free blog hosting?

Many sites offer free blog hosting. Among them are Forumer, Blogger, BlogEasy, Aeonity, BlogThing and Blogates. A quick search for ?free blog? on Google reveals many possibilities.

What software can I use to host my own blog?

Like free blog hosting, there are many possibilities for software that makes hosting your own blog easy. Most of them are free to use. These include:

WordPress(the most popular software)

Apache Roller

Blosxom

Geeklog

Textpattern

LifeType

There is also blog software which you can purchase for use on your site. These include:

Community Server

Movable Type

Radio UserLand

One negative about using software and hosting your own blog is that the process can often times be complicated. You have to download the software and install it to your server, which doesn?t always go easily. It?s particularly hard for those who don?t have a lot of experience installing things on servers.

Why should I remotely host my blog at a place like Blogger?

Places like Blogger allow you to host your blog there. It?s a good option for many people.

The Pros

? It?s easy to set up and maintain a blog. You don?t have to go through the trouble of installing software and configuring it to work on your server. All you have to do is sign up for an account and start posting.

? It?s friendly for beginning bloggers. Sites that host blogs offer good tutorials on how to make your blog postings, so that even someone who is completely new to the concept of blogging can do it easily.

? Most blog hosting sites are completely free to use. There is no need to pay for things like a domain name and hosting.

? Monetizing your blog is easy. Rather than having to manually put HTML/Javascript codes on your blog to manually set up things like AdSense and Pay Per Click advertising, you can select an option on most blog hosting sites that does much of the work for you.

The Cons

? You don?t have as many options to customize your blog. Remotely hosted blogs are admittedly somewhat limited in terms of what you can actually do on them. You have to stick with what is provided to you in terms of look and features.

? The URL you get is always yourname.

com. You don?t get to have a custom domain name like YOURNAME.com. This can possibly hurt traffic to your blog.

? Blogs hosted on free blog sites don?t look as professional as self hosted blogs.

Why should I self-host my blog?

The Pros

? You have more options and more flexibility. You are able to tweak the blog to your liking.

? Your URL is your address for your blog. Rather than having go to where your blog is hosted to read it, they can read it right from your site.

? The ability to make your blog look professional. Blogs that are hosted on sites of their own tend to look a lot better than those hosted on free sites.

? More space for your blog. Free blog sites usually place a restriction on how much space you have for things like photos and music. By hosting your own blog, you are able to use as much space as you need.

The Cons

? There are sometimes problems with setting up blog software to run on your site and server. If you aren?t experienced when it comes to working with mySQL, the process will be hard.

? Updates aren?t as easy to post.

? You have to manually set up programs to monetize your blog. However, if you are good with HTML/Javascript, this shouldn?t be too hard.

? You have to pay for your own hosting and domain

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both. Which should you choose? Well, it depends on who you are and what you intend to use your blog for. If you intend to use it for business, then a self-hosted blog is the best idea. If it?s a personal blog, then a free hosted blog will probably be fine for you.

Closely examine all of the pros and cons mentioned above. That way, you?ll be able to make the best decision for you!

Used Computers (Desktops/Laptops)Â? What To Look For?

By: Christophe Catesson

Nowadays desktops and laptops are much more durable and dependable that they were just five years ago. Therefore, buying a used or refurbished computer is becoming more of a trend.

Suppliers replace their computers on average every 6 months and companies frequently upgrade their equipment. Buying one of these used or refurbished computers can save you a lot of money while still using a quite up to date technology. This is even more relevant if you are not a heavy user (i.e. most of your time on a computer is spent online, you may use a few standard applications once in a while). Even modestly priced computers will more than suffice for these types of demand.

Thinking about buying a used or refurbished desktop or laptop?

Buying a computer is not at all an easy job, one has look get detailed information of the available computers of good and reputed brands. One must take into consideration the size, color, configurations, features etc? While your computer should correspond to your personality and lifestyle, you should always keep in mind the reputation of the brand in the market. Brand counts a lot; you can render good service by the manufacturer if your computer is damaged.

Important handy Tips before buying a computer…

* Verify if the brand is reputed and always buy a good reputed brand. Read about customer service experience for that specific computer issues

* Check the warranty/guarantee of the computer (seek out computers which still have warranty/guarantee remaining)

* Compare the price of the new model in the market with what price your buying your used computer, try to get the best bargain. i.e. a two year old computer should not be bought for more than half of its original price.

* Check if the computer is outdated (if out of production it is difficult to get spare parts)

* Is the operating system current (Windows Vista/Windows Xp). Earlier versions probably run slower (windows 2000) and would not be advisable unless your needs are limited (i.e. web surfing, Word…). In any event, stay away with computers running on Windows 98 (granted you don’t find many anymore). Also be aware of Windows Vista. Many users are reverting back to XP and that is even more obvious in the corporate world. Why? Vista looks nice but doesn’t bring many technical improvements; therefore IT managers are not willing to implement something new when what they have works just fine. Some domestic users just don’t like the new way of navigation within the Vista Operating System.

* Check if the configuration of the computer you are buying is good.

* Check the speed of the processor. If possible start the computer and see how long it takes to fully turn on. If its slow just turning on, imagine the lack of speed once you start adding software.

Additional Tips for laptops

* Is the battery life good? (search for the computers with a very good battery backup (2 hours minimum).

* Check for the screen size of the computer your buying and see to it that it is not exceeding the Normal (normally the screen size should be between 15-17). Less than that generally translates in older computers and increases the chance of age failure. Once the screen breaks, you are often better of changing the whole computer.

* Review the connectivity of the computer (Network, USB, Video, Audio?) look to it that it has a good connectivity including wireless

* Check out the weight. Ensure the computer is light enough for you to carry (light 7pounds)

Where to buy used computers:

* Online auctions. Pro: Often offer the best prices. Cons: Cannot validate the accuracy of the described item. No warranty. Tip 1: Some companies will offer warranty for up to two years, the cost is about 12 of the purchase price. Tip2: Buy from sellers with great feedback, do not hesitate to contact the seller with questions prior to bidding

* Online marketplaces: Pro: Set prices and quantities - Sometime warranty is available. Cons: Prices can vary a lot, do your homework

* Craiglist.com Contacting sellers on Craiglist.com in your local area gives you a chance to meet with the owner and physically test the computer before the purchase

Where to buy refurbished computers:

Refurbished computers can be a great way to buy as they have warranties and are generally sold by manufacturers or companies affiliated with them.

* Manufacturers websites will tell you how to buy directly from them or from their authorized sellers. Pros: Warranty, established companies. Cons: Prices are higher than regular auctions (you pay more for peace of mind)

Buying a used or refurbished computer can be a great way to save money. If you use some of the advice discussed above you can avoid many pitfalls. One last thing concerning laptops, make sure you have a good bag to protect your computer from a fatal accident. Your bag should be big enough for a 17 inch screen computer as it is rapidly becoming the norm, you will probably change your computer within a few years, the bag you may keep a lot longer.

Good Buy!

My WifeÂ?s First (and Hopefully Last) Computer Virus

By: Andrew Kasch

My wife came home from work the other day very upset. She works for a bank in the mortgage Department and they had given her a laptop for her use at work. Someone had sent her an e-mail that had an interesting sounding attachment, so she opened it. It wasn’t long before things started to go wrong with her computer. Not only were there multiple pop-ups that were taking place all of the time but her computer had slowed to a crawl. It seems that there were so many viruses and spyware programs running on her computer that it simply could not keep up with the load. All of this happened because of one Trojan horse virus that was opened on her computer that allowed all of these other things to happen.

If it wasn’t bad enough that she had the pop ups, they soon begin to become embarrassing. Not only were they trying to sell her things, but many of the pop-ups were simply obscene material and pornographic advertisements. This certainly did not look good coming across on her computer all of the time, especially when she was dealing with mortgage clients. She was practically in tears by the time she had come home to ask me if there was anything that I could do.

The first thing that I did was to try to identify what they pop-up windows were and where they were originating from. It turns out that the particular spyware program on her computer was of the ?Trojan Horse? variety, and was actually one of the more difficult ones to remove. Not only that, but the virus had really taken over a lot of her computer. We both feared that there was some keystroke logging going on in the background. I needed to get this computer clean from the Trojan horse virus and get it cleaned quickly.

Because it was a computer that was associated with a bank I needed to get permission from their network guy to be able to log on to the internet from home.

I ran a free program called Hijack This and posted the results to one of the many technical forums on the internet. (I trusted this particular forum, so I did not have any real concerns about privacy.)

The technical forum gave me step-by-step instructions on how to clean the system from the Trojan horse virus and all of the spyware that it allowed to enter onto her computer. It took me several hours and I needed to go in and edit system files and the registry but I was finally able to win out over the virus and her computer was now clean.

It doesn’t matter where an e-mail is coming from. It could come from your mother or someone else that you know and trust very much. If a Trojan horse virus is propagating on their system and sending itself out to others you will likely be a target of this virus as well. Never open anything that you are unsure of, and even if you are sure, run a virus scan on it first.

Pay Per Click Jobs - Your Checklist To Finding The Right Job For You

By: Derek Rogers

When it comes to making a living online, the chances have never been brighter! You already see that there are plenty of people who are seeing a great deal of success when it comes to making money online, but what might not be immediately apparent is how you can join them. Search engine marketing, particularly through pay per click services, is becoming quite popular when it comes to earning a living from the comfort of your own home, but remember, you need to be critical of the opportunities that you will find. Take a look below for some tips that will steer you towards the right opportunity, and don’t go forward until you can tick every single one off of your list.

Find out how much time you can devote to this opportunity.

The best opportunity for you will be one that will fit into the time that you have slotted for it. It doesn’t matter how great an opportunity is if you are constantly trying to get more work, or it constantly expects more from you than you can give.

Think about the salary.

What are your current needs? Do you have a job that you are looking to get rid of, but does it currently pay the bills? Are you unemployed and need a situation fast? There is often a time period when search engine marketing opportunities and pay per click services will need to wait before they pay you. Ask how long it will be before you receive your first pay check and how much they think it will be.

Do you have the capabilities to do the job?

Think about your internet set up at home. Do you have a reliable connection and can you clock time on your own on the computer? Too many people need to fight for a turn to use the computer, and this can be quite detrimental to your plans. Take some time to really sort through your resources and what they will be for the foreseeable future. Think about any disruptions (visits, vacations, the busy time at your other job) and make sure you take them into consideration.

How To Wipe Disk Drives, And Why

By: Sam Miller

Data security has become a bigger concern as the information age goes into full swing. Computers are becoming more and more commonplace as versatile tools for a wide variety of tasks and uses. This has made digital storage increasingly the data storage format of choice, since digital information is easily accessed and processed by computers.

This has led to a rise in interest in digital information and data storage systems. Apart from developments in hardware technology that allow bigger capacity devices with faster access times, security has also become a prime consideration. Most software and programs nowadays come equipped with varying levels of security options. For instance, it is now possible to protect almost any file with a password such that only those who can provide the correct password would be able to access the information within the file.

However, these software security measures would not stand up to dedicated data extraction efforts, in particular those involving the actual physical hardware. Physically securing the hard drive (or other data storage device) under consideration may not always be possible or practical. Another way of ensuring that important data is not placed at risk is to wipe the disk.

Simply deleting the contents of a hard disk is not enough to ensure that they are not recovered. In fact, there are software utilities that allow the recovery of deleted data. This possibility is because when a file is deleted, it is not actually overwritten or removed from the hard disk. Instead, a marker is just associated with the file to say that it has been deleted, and the space it occupies on the disk is marked available for use. This means that the data in the file remains on the disk for the knowledgeable hacker to extract and view.

Wiping a disk, on the other hand, is a much more thorough process. In a disk wipe, all data to be wiped off is actually overwritten with random data.

The True Value of Hard Drive Data
...

(In theory, it would still be possible to reconstruct the data lost after a hard disk wipe, but this would require high-powered microscopes and would proceed much too slowly to be useful!)

Performing a disk wipe is facilitated by the many disk wipe programs available. There are many free options, as well as commercial software options, which may differ in terms of functionality and documentation. The majority of these are available online, which makes it quite easy to browse through and find the most appropriate program for the specific task. Some programs are designed for use on a single personal computer, while others may be designed for use on batches of computers.

Confidential data that needs to be kept from being exposed may best be hidden by using a disk wipe. This simple additional security measure makes the recovery of deleted data nearly impossible. With the many disk wipe programs available, it is easier than ever to perform a disk wipe, even for casual users, making this a real data security option.

Eliminating Unused Resources with Telecom Expense Management

By: Peter Verhoeff

With the proliferation of mobile devices and new technologies like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the old ways of keeping track of equipment and services are no longer adequate. And even though communication costs have plummeted in recent years, demand has also increased, with new high tech devices being added almost daily. If anything, the need for Telecom Expense Management (TEM) software has increased, particularly in the area of inventory control.

Tracking inventory can be a troublesome task. A good starting point is to collect all telecom vendors? invoices and establish what is being billed for. This may not give an accurate picture, as billing errors are common.

Some TEM systems incorporate a cable management module that provides a firm basis for establishing what the communications network consists of. This feature greatly simplifies managing the physical layer details for any network. It documents the circuits and physical connectivity for all cable connections between voice and data equipment in single or multi-building network cable plants.

The cable network data must be supplemented with an inventory of mobile devices that are not part of the physical network. These mobile devices should be recorded, along with the names of the persons using them and tied to personnel records. The necessity for this is illustrated by the case of one large company that, after implementing a TEM system, found that 3500 monthly cell phone bills were still being paid for ex-employees who had long since left, costing the company in excess of a million dollars per year.

Once the inventory is complete and accurate, it should be inspected for any non-optimum utilization of resources. For example, it is not uncommon for telecom vendors to continue billing for branch locations that have been closed, either because they were not notified or because they failed to adjust their records.

Any equipment or service that is not associated with an employee, department, project or profit center is likely to be unused and can be discontinued.

The telecommunications network is not a static entity and configuration changes are common. Any moves, additions, changes and disconnections (MACD) of service or equipment should immediately be recorded online, so as to keep the inventory up-to-date.

Cisco CCNA,CCNP,CCENT,and CompTIA Network+ And Security+ Questions: VLANs,SYN Attacks,And More!

By: Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933

Let?s test your knowledge of important topics such as SYN attacks and VLANs for your Cisco CCNA, CCNP, and CCENT exams, as well as the CompTIA Security+ and Network+ certification exams!

CCNA / CCENT / CompTIA Network+ Certification:

Host A and Host B are in the same VLAN. Host C and Host D are in a different VLAN. Host A sends a broadcast. How many other hosts will receive it?

A. Zero

B. One

C. Two

D. Three

Answer: B. The other host in the same VLAN, Host B, will receive it. Broadcasts are not forwarded to other VLANs.

Security+ Certification:

Briefly describe a “SYN attack”.

Answer: The intruder will generate a series of SYN requests, and the soon-to-be-victimized network device sends a SYN-ACK in response. The device then waits for an ACK, but that never comes. These unfinished connections result in the network device not being able to accept SYN request from legitimate network hosts, since its buffers will be overwhelmed with the false (and unfinished) requests.

CCNP Certification / BSCI Exam:

If an IPv6 address begins with “FF”, what type of address is it?

A. broadcast

B. unicast

C. multicast

D. MACcast

Answer: C.

Fun Games to Play With the Family

By: Dave Roth

Many families today do not spend that much time together. Life seems to get in the way, and they end up going their separate ways and doing their own things. However, there are ways to bring the family closer, and one way is through the playing of games. With that in mind, however, it is important to find games that everyone can play, so that they can all have fun and enjoy what they are doing. Without the entire family being able to play, the people that are left out will be resentful and the goal of getting the entire family involved will be lost. Fortunately, there are many fun games available.

Some of the easiest ones to play are backyard games like horseshoes and beanbag toss. These are games that do not require a lot of set-up and preparation. In addition, they have simple rules and they are games that almost anyone of any age can play. Because of this, the entire family from very young children through to the elderly grandparents and even great-grandparents can play them. When games are available for such a large group of individuals, they can really help to keep families together. Sometimes, though, the weather is bad and games cannot be played outside. It may be too hot for everyone to enjoy it, or it may be raining or cold.

Notebook / Laptop Memory (RAM) Upgrade In 5 Minutes Or Less

By: Christophe Catesson

This article is set up in two parts, one part about RAM overview and a second part about RAM upgrade. If you are curious on how the RAM works, you will find a detail summary that should give you all the information that you need to know about RAM, organization and speed. If you just want to read the how to upgrade section, move on directly to part two Upgrade your laptop ram in 5 minutes or less.

1 ? RAM Overview

There are two big categories of random access memories:

* Dynamic memories (DRAM, Dynamic Random Access Module), not very costly. They are in most cases used for the central memory of the computer

* Static memories (SRAM, Static Random Access Module), quick and expensive. SRAM is notably used for cache memories of the processor

Functioning of the random access memory

The random access memory is constituted of hundred of thousand small condensers storing charges. When it is loaded, the logical state of the condenser is equal to 1, otherwise it belongs to 0, what means that every condenser represents one bit of memory.

Given that condensers off-load, it is always necessary to recharge them in a space of regular time called cycle of refreshment. Memory DRAM requires cycles of refreshment for instance (Ns) is about 15 nanoseconds.

Every condenser is coupled with a transistor allowing to “recover « or to change the state of the condenser. These transistors are lined up in form of matrix, that is they achieve a hut memory (so called memory) by a line and a column.

So, for a memory of type DRAM, the time of access is of 60 nanoseconds (35ns of delay of cycle and 25 ns of time of latency). On a computer, the time of cycle corresponds contrary to the frequency of the clock, for instance for a computer pulsated in 200 MHz, the time of cycle is 5 ns (1 / (200*106)).

As a result a computer having a frequency well brought up and using memories the time of access of which is much longer than the time of cycle of the processor must perform cycles of wait to access to the memory. In the case of a computer pulsated in 200 MHz using memories of types DRAM (which the time of access is of 60ns), there are 11 cycles of wait as a cycle of transfer. The performances of the computer are of as much diminished as there are cycles

Formats of Random Access Memory (RAM)

There are numerous types of random access memories. These all come in the form of barrettes of memory attachable on the motherboard.

* SIMM (Single Inline Memory Module): it is about printed circuits among which one of the faces has fleas of memory. There are two types of barrettes SIMM, according to the number of connector cables (30 or 72)

* DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Modulates) are from memories 64 bits, what explains why it is not necessary to match them. Barrettes DIMM have fleas of memory on both sides of printed circuit and have also 84 connector cables on each side, what endows them with a total of 168 brooches. They have bigger dimensions than barrettes SIMM (130×25mm).

* RIMM (Rambus Inline Memory Module, conscripts also RD-RAM or DRD-RAM) are from memories 64 bits developed by the society Rambus. They have 184 brooches. These barrettes have two notches of location (détrompeurs), avoiding very risk of confusion with the previous modules. Considering their well brought up speed of transfer, barrettes RIMM have a thermal film made responsible for ameliorating the clearing up of warmth. As in the case of DIMM, there are modules of smaller size, called SO RIMM (Small Outline RIMM), intended for laptop computers. Barrettes SO RIMM include only 160 brooches.

* DRAM (Dynamic RAM, dynamic RAM) is the type of memo most spread at the beginning of the millennium. It is about a memory from which transistors are lined up in a matrix according to lines and of columns. A transistor, coupled with a condenser gives the information of a bit. 1 byte consisting of 8 bits, a barrette of memory 256 Mb DRAM will contain 256 therefore * 2^10 * 2^10 = 256 * on 1024 * on 1024 = 268 435 456 bytes = 268 435 456 * 8 = 2 147 483 648 bits = 2 147 483 648 transistors. A 256 Mb barrette has so in reality a capacity of 268 435 456 bytes, that is 268 Mb! These are memories from which the time of access is 60 ns. On the other hand, accesses memory are made in general on data lined up consecutively in memory. So the mode of access in gust (burst mode) allows to achieve the three successive data in the first one without time of additional latency.

* DRAM FPM to speed up accesses to DRAM, there is a technology, called pagination consisting in achieving data located on the same column by changing the address of the line only, what allows to avoid the repetition of the number of column between the reading of each of the lines. They speak then about DRAM FPM (Fast Page Mode). FPM allows to acquire time of access in the order of 70 - 80 nanoseconds for a frequency of functioning that can go from 25 to 33 Mhz.

* DRAM EDO (Extended Data Out, Goes out of data ameliorated sometimes also called “hyper-page”) appears in 1995. The technology used with this type of memory consists in addressing the following column during the reading of the data of a column. It creates an overlapping of accesses allowing to save time on every cycle.

So, RAM EDO, when it is used in mode gust allows to acquire cycles of form 5-2-2-2, that is a benefit of 4 cycles on the access to 4 data. As much as memory EDO did not accept the upper frequencies in 66 Mhz, it disappeared in aid of SDRAM.

* SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM, translate synchronous RAM), appeared in 1997, allows a reading of data synchronized with the bus of the card-mother, contrary to memories EDO and FPM (qualified as asynchronous) having their own clock. SDRAM allows therefore to free itself from time of wait owed to synchronization with the card-mother. This one allows to acquire a cycle in mode gust of form 5-1-1-1, that is to say benefit of 3 cycles in comparison with RAM EDO. In that way SDRAM is able of working with a cadenza going until 150 Mhz, allowing him to acquire from time of access about 10 ns.

* DR-SDRAM (Direct Rambus DRAM or else RDRAM) is a type of memory allowing to transfer data on a bus of 16 wide bits to a cadenza of 800Mhz, what confers on him a band passer-by of 1,6 Go / s. As SDRAM, this type of memory is synchronized with the clock of the bus to ameliorate exchanges of data.

* DDR-SDRAM (Double Dated Miss SDRAM) is a memory based on technology SDRAM, allowing to double the rate of transfer of SDRAM with equal frequency. Reading or writing of data in memory am accomplished on the basis of a clock. Standard memory DRAM uses a method conscript SDR (Single Data Fails) consisting in reading or writing data in every forehead going up. DDR allows to double the frequency of reading / writings, with a clock pulsated in the same frequency, by sending data in every forehead going up, as well as in every downward forehead. Memory DDR has in general a commercial appellation of type PCXXXX where “XXXX ” represent the debit side in Mb / s.

* DDR2 (or DDR-II) allows to attain twice as well brought up debit sides as DDR with equal external frequency. They speak about QDR (Quadruple Dated Fail or quad-pumped) to indicate the method of reading and used writing. Memory DDR2 uses in effect two channels separated for reading and for writing, so it is able of sending or of accepting twice more data than DDR.

2 - Upgrading Your Laptop RAM

upgrading a notebook memory is a specific simple process pending that you have the right RAM and are somewhat delicate.

There are different types of RAM, and you must choose the one that is compatible with your notebook computer. Memory is also a fragile, so you need to be very cautious when installing it. You should ensure that the laptop is turned off and disconnected from any exterior power supply. No lights should be visible.

It is a lot easier to install RAM on a laptop versus a desktop PC. Access to the memory slots is via a panel generally located in the bottom of the laptop. Once you have opened this panel with a small screwdriver you can see the existing memory. you can check the exact type of memory that your Notebook currently uses, because it is usually shown on the front of the memory strips and will be evident when you open up the memory panel.

The memory strips are generally locked in with small clips on the ends of the strips. To take out existing memory, simply flip the clips and then remove the memory strips gently from their holding place. If you are simply adding memory, and there is space available, just add the new memory, gently pushing it in to ensure it is fully seated in the slots, and then push the clips to hold the new memory in place.

Once you have replaced or added your Notebook computer memory, replace the access panel, and then screw the panel back in place. Lastly, power up the notebook, When the PC starts up, it will count the memory and tell you how much RAM is loaded on your laptop.

As long as you have right memory, the whole operation should take less than 5 minutes, you can then enjoy your faster, less crash prone laptop.

Do You Have Access To Enough IT Staff?

By: Jane Smith

No matter how well a business is run and how efficient its computer system is, employees will always run into problems now and again. Whether it?s a simple computer glitch or a major error, it?s good to know you have the right staff on hand to solve the problem in the shortest amount of time possible.

The problem is that you need to know this ahead of time ? not when your computers crash and you suddenly realise you don?t have the staff or the resources to cope with it and get things back up and running again.

Not only can this have a detrimental effect on your business, it can also mean that when problems do occur it takes longer for your business to recover. That?s why it pays to review your IT infrastructure and your current needs in order to make sure you are fully prepared and able to take the necessary actions if or when they are ever needed.

In small companies there is often no need to have a specific IT department to call on in the event of any problems. In this case it is often better to hire multi-skilled employees for certain roles, so you have people in place at all times that you can call on to rectify any problems or issues as they arise. Part of their job role in this situation may be to identify possible issues before they arise, and take the necessary steps to prevent them occurring in the first place.

Of course the size of a company can have a big effect at the other end of the scale as well. If a company grows quickly and experiences a sustained period of success, resulting in the need to take on more employees in a short period of time, the current IT department may no longer be able to meet the needs of the larger business.

In this case it?s essential to quickly identify how the department should be expanded, what its new brief should be and how many new staff members are required to meet the needs of the larger business.

XML originate from SGML (Standardized General Markup Language) and is a simplified version of it .it was developed members of w3c and released in Feb. it is an international standard that has been in use as a markup language primarily for technical documentation and government application since the early .it was developed to standardize the production process for large documents like medical records, company data bases and so on marking-up documents using sgml allowed information to be passed form one system to the next without losing any information. Early on, it was thought that sgmi would be used for the web but HTML a very basic subset of SGML became popular for its visual layout and ease of use .the focus next went on creating a language which has the strength and structural power of SGML and is as easy to use as html, the result was xml.

While using html your scope is limited to a specified set of tags. You can use html tags to present your information on a processing web designed page but then you are limited to only these specified tags .in XML on the other hand, you have the liberty to create the tags you want to use .it extends your ability to describe a document allowing you to define meaningful tags suiting your application requirements. Could Your IT Department Be More Streamlined?

By: Jane Smith

Many companies take on extra staff when business is good, ensuring they have enough people on board to cope with all the tasks that need to be done.

But ?enough people? does not always correspond to ?the right number of people?. Moreover it?s easy for job roles to become blurred, creating an overspill of talent in one area and a shortfall in another.

It?s particularly important for the IT department to be well organised, as so many other areas of a business rely on that department to keep the computer system running at peak performance on a day to day basis. This is why streamlining your IT department is vital to ensure that the right people are always in the right place at the right time.

The first step in the streamlining process is to identify the strengths of the people in the team. Are some people wasted in their job roles? Do others do too little? Finding out what each person does can also highlight any areas of potential weakness which could be exploited if the IT infrastructure were to run into any major problems at any point.

Some companies are reluctant to alter or lose any particular job roles, but sometimes it?s necessary to ensure maximum productivity and make the department more streamlined. After all it has a responsibility to keep the IT infrastructure operating at peak performance, and if the current state of the department is putting that in jeopardy then it?s obvious that certain changes will need to be made.

It does happen that some companies employ too many IT specialists during peaks in trading, and then find they are left with too many at other times of the year when it tends to be quieter by nature. A good solution to streamlining the department in this case would be to keep a skeleton staff at all times, and outsource to an external company to provide the extra assistance needed during busier times.

Fighting Off Viruses: Advancements In Antivirus Software Suites

By: Nial Robbins

Protecting your computer from a virus is getting harder and harder each day. While it may border on the paranoid, it goes without saying that you can?t leave your guard down for one second. Even corporate giant Microsoft has found its own systems compromised on more than one occasion.

Remember the ?good old days?, before the advent of the Internet and downloadable programs? Life was simple then in terms of computer viruses. With the primary way in which a virus could be transmitted being limited to floppy disks, the ability to catch and eradicate the virus was a lot easier. By today?s standards, it used to take quite a while before a virus was able to infect a computer and slow down the system. The antivirus software of that time was typically able to identify and eradicate viruses before they caused too much damage. Additionally, computer users were pretty savvy on how to protect themselves in terms of scanning all floppy disks before copying them to our desktop.

The Internet helped change all that. The Internet provided a conduit by which viruses could move from host to host with lightening speed. No longer could a computer user just worry about floppy disks as points of entry, but they now had to worry about email, email attachments, peer-to-peer file sharing, instant messaging, and software downloads. Today?s viruses can attack through multiple entry points, spread without human intervention, and take full advantage of vulnerabilities within a system or program. With technology advancing everyday, and the convergence of computers with other mobile devices, the potential of new types of threats also increase.

Protecting Your Computer

Luckily, the advancement of antivirus software has kept pace with current virus threats. Antivirus software is essential to a computer?s ability to fend off viruses and other malicious programs. These products are designed to protect against the ability of a virus to enter a computer through email, web browsers, file servers and desktops. Additionally, these programs offer a centralized control feature that handle deployment, configuration and updating.

A computer user should remain diligent and follow a few simple steps to protect against the threat of a virus:

1. Evaluate your current computer security system.

With the threat of a new generation of viruses able to attack in a multitude of ways, the approach of having just one antivirus software version has become outdated. You need to be confident that you have protected all aspects of your computer system from the desktop to the network, and from the gateway to the server. Consider a more comprehensive se
